Gmail Threading

Why doesn't Google allow users to turn off the gmail threading feature? Google this topic, and you will see tons of users complaining about it. A few argue its merits. My reply to them is - OK, make it an option - don't force it on me.

It's sort of like the annoyance from Microsoft... where a file open dialog box does not remember that you want to show details, and sort by date. I can see some people not wanting to sort by date all the time, but who doesn't want to see file details? I can't imagine.
